INITIAL IDEAS

Sam Smith - Make It To Me

This video is very simplistic yet it pairs with the song perfecty and does create an impact on the viewer. Focussing solely on the artist is a good idea, this is because it makes you connect with the song more. As the song is a ballad it is a good idea to not have a video that has a lot going on as it lessens the effect that the song has and takes away that authentic display of the singers emotions. The setting is very plain and his clothes tie in with this scene, by doing this it puts all of your focus onto the words that are being sung, rather than what is going on in the video. There is a lot of camera movement which is vital to keep the audience entertained when viewing this video. As well as this the piernest can be seen in certain shots, this creates a good effect as you are able to view exactly what you are hearing. Focus pulls are also used to focus on the artist and his piernist in the background. This video has been carefully constructed to convey a soleful song that the audience can connect with.

Rihanna - Pour It Up

As soon as the video starts it strikes you as 'weird'. This image that Rihanna is conveying in this video is a sexy looking dancer that also has a lot of riches. Her outfit choice is very explicit with lots of diamantes over her bra and a big fur jacket, this portrays that she is almost a lady pimp. The lyrics tie in with the video as we start to see exotic dancers on the poles as she sings "strippers going up and down that pole". As well as this money is spoken in her song, her money is conveyed in the unusual setting. The video quickly fades from one scene to the next, this cleverly keeps the audience intrigued as a fast paced song and video does. Using a water setting creates a good effect as the water moves in time to the beat of the song. The words in the song are quite straight foward and in this video Rihanna is creating a narrative for her song, almost word for word she does an action that ties in with her lyrics e.g. throwing the money it the aire as she says "throw it up throw it up". Lighting is used very cleverly, lots of different coloured lighting is used to create the effect of a strip club. The video is very unsual and explicit yet it ties in perfectley with the image she wants to convey and her lyrics.

Philip George & Anton Powers - Alone No More

The video begins with a birds eye view of an island in the summer which matches the beat of the song perfectly as it is an upbeat song and would instantly think of summer.  This feeling of summer is then shown in the jet ski riding across the sea and the jumping off of rocks into the sea.  As the song pace becomes faster, the editing of the couple becomes quicker which is a perfect representation of the song too. There are many different locations of where this video is shot which again, matches the pace of the song.  As a group, we hope to match the pace of the song to the video as we believe this tells the story better.  Towards the end of the video the editing becomes a lot quicker, showing the couple have fun together.  However; at the end of the video it shows the couple kissing in the sea as the song fades out which matches goes well with the last lyrics of the song.

The Weeknd - Often

This video begins very slowly which matches the music immediately, the camera zooms into the back of The Weeknd and moves up over his face to make it look like he is lying down which is a great effective to have in a video.  For the majority of the video, the camera is panning around the room with the occassional close up shot of The Weeknd.  These shots focus solely on his face so the audience can see the expression on his face which matches the theme and tune of the song.  The video gives the sense that there are activities taking place around him but he is oblivious or is watching on.  The way in which is this video is constructed matches perfectly to the tempo and theme of the song.  The video does link to the lyrics of the song which we feel is the best way to go with our video as it is a true reflection of the song itself.

This music video consists of old home videos of Ed Sheeran throughout the whole song. As the song goes on the videos become more recent and show how Sheeran has progressed throughout his musical life. The sound has been kept from the videos which gives an emotional affect to the video as you can her himself and members of his family talking. The videos used sre not great quality, however this creates a better affect as it shows the age and how times have changed. the layout of the song is quite simple as no new footage has been used, and only editing has been used to put all of the home videos together.

Ed Sheeran - Photograph

Justin Bieber - What Do You Mean

The music video has been set up like a film, the first scene includes credits to show who directed the video and the characters in it. There is a clock ticking in the background of the song which goes with story of the song, showing that the two characters are running out of time, a clock is also being constantly shown. The lighting throughout the whole video has a red tint, which creates a dangerous and romantic mood. It has been set up at night, which also creates a more dangerous atmostphere. The story for the video consists of a boy and girl together, constantly kissing and then sending mixed signals, which relates to the song title 'what do you mean'. There are two main settings in the video, the bedroom and also a skatepark at the end of the video, which is shown when everyone comes together. The mood changes and everyone is enjoying themselves, the music adds to this as the chrorus is played again after a long music build up.

Arctic Monkeys- Arabella

This video is unique video as it involves a lot of reverse filming and it is all in black & white. The video is shown to be unique from the outset & throughout as very abrubt rewinding takes place and the filming is very edgy. At the start of the video you hear an interview clip of a man talking about the fact he does not feel like himself but feels like he is several other people, this firstly introduces to unique & edgy style of the music video. There is a lot of sexual scenes throughout the video & many shots of lovers engaging in some sort of physical contact introducing the sexual atomosphere of this video. The different shots of motorcyles, sexual scene & the band themselves makes the video more enjoyable for the viewers as they are attracted to see whats going on. There are many close ups of the band members playing their instruments & singing in time with the song, which is then reversed & fast forward to then again be in time with the music, carrying on the edginess of the video. The theme of the video and the lyrics & tone of the song sexualise everything about this video because the band memebers & actors in the video are made to look extremley attractive & seductive to the audience. The unique syle of this video is carried on as the filming gets more frantic & the lovers in the video get much closer. At the end of the video the quote ends whilst seeing a womens ghostly face appear over the film of the band.

Chris Brown & Rita Ora- Body on me

Chris Brown & Rita Ora's music video for 'Body on Me' is a very romantic & sexual video of a couple who have a very sexual connection between them. This is shown by the sexual tension shown throughout the whole video by the body movement and the sexual & physical scenes between the two. It starts with them both in a lift together, this is where they begin the sexual tension between them, it is clear they both fancy eachother but are not telling eachother. This continues throughout the whole video as video clips are shown of them imagining what it would be like to be together. The video goes very well with the theme and lyrics of the song as the song includes the lyrics 'Just Imagine us' which implies the theme of the video, along with the rest of the song. This song & video is also extremeley sexual & physical including multiple attractive & flattering shots of each person in the video. The couple in the video are clearly attracted to eahother & the whole video involves them being drawn to eachother. The shots and footage used in the video work well together to present the attraction & involvment of the couple. this is done by using the low lights to present passion, the colour red presents the theme of romance & the close & personal shots presents the attraction & closness of the couple.

CONCLUSION

We have decided that we want to create a hybrid of narrative and also a band perfomance, this is because we want to convey a story from the lyrics as we feel it is more touching, however we were also very intrigued by Arrabella's band performance as we feel it is an entertaining visual. From Sam Smiths video we really liked the shots that were used, for example the close up of him singing and also the piernist in the background; this is something we are going to try and include in our music video. We liked the theme love as we feel it is somomething easy to portray and also that is the theme for many top hits globally nad you can really express a songs emotion through the use of camera shots and the narrative video linked with the band performance. We feel that the easiest way to convey this is through the use of a couple. From Ed sheerans video and also Arabella is the old movie style that they include in their video, we feel it gives the video a nice touch and contrasts between then and now.
