EVALUATION QUESTION 3

By Daisy White

Audience feedback is paramount to creating the perfect product. Asking people from our chosen genre to highlight improvements to be made is vital, as without this we ourselves do not know what needs to be changed. When we initially startedfilming our rough cut we only had a brief outline of what we wanted our music video to look like and the types of shots we wanted to incorporate. As soon as filming commenced it was clear there was vast room for improvement and this was also shown in our rough cut product.

To gain audience feedback, we asked people in our target audience to give us some basic pointers on how we could change the music video. As well as this we showed our video to other students studying the Media A-Level and asked for their more specific feedback. They wrote this down for us so we were able to come back to it and make the necessary changes so that our product is the best we can do.

What have you learned from your audience feedback?

Rough Cut

After having 14 peers in our media class watch and evaluate our music video we were able to recieve a broader opinion and understanding of where we went wrong in the video and possible suggestions for new improvements. We decided it would be better to ask the members in our class for more specific feedback as they are aware of the forms and conventions of a music video and therefore, they would be able to help us rather than give a general opinion on the music video.

  • Like the Black and White effect used.

  • Like the close up of the drums and drumers foot.

  • Good timing in the opening guitar playing. It ties in with the sound of it playing.

  • Some shots are very clear cut.

  • The setting is perfect for your genre and the cross in the background adds to the edgy effect.

  • The clothing suits your chosen genre.

  • Lead singers performance is almost outstanding.

LIKES

DISLIKES

  • Change the bass player he looks bored and like he can't play

  • There isn't enough camera movement, which is making it boring.

  • Not enough variety of different shots.

  • Not enough close ups of the instruments

  • Camera is a bit shakey at times.

  • Out of time in some places.

  • The drummer needs to be more enthusiastic.

  • Dont crop the singers head out at the beggining.

  • Need to change the finish as it is awful.

Feedback & Action Plan

After receiving our audience feedback we were able to then start planning to make our music video adopt all of the forms and conventions of a proffessional music video. We took the comments from our peers and teacher on board and if anything it has helped improve our video, rather than viewing it as a negative thing. We created a video of our feedback and action plan, which is shown below.

From this, we were able to plan which changes were vital. For example, we now knew that there had to be a set list of shots that we needed to use and the only way we would definitley use them all is if we created a tick list. The feedback we recieved was so specific that it was easy for us to target exactly what needs to be changed. Luckily the dislikes of the video were minors therefore it was easy enough to correct them all. Below is the final cut of our music video.

Final Cut

Major changes we made based on our feedback:

  • We changed 2 of the band members completely, this is because we felt that it would be best to make our video look most like a real band playing

  • We consciously made an effort to use an array of shots and also moved the camera often to keep in time with the tempo of the song

  • When editing our video we listened to the beat of the song more carefully to make sure our cuts are in time with the song

  • We also positioned that camera so it didnt cut out the singers head

  • We also changed the ending massively, we now feel that it is much better, they all come together in unison and as the song cuts they walk away, when looking at other music videos this is something that has been done before.
