FLATPLAN OF DIGIPAK

By Daisy White

We decided collectively that the best way to come to a conclusion on what our album cover would look like is to draw out rough plans of all of our ideas and then bring them all together to come to a harmonious decision about which album cover fits our genre best and does portray potentially what the music is about or just is a strong focal image that would attract the target audience.

When creating a flat plan of our potential album cover it enables us to see clearly what each aspect of the cover would look like and it is also an easy way to critique each flat plan in order to decide on one final album cover.

Design 1

As you can see I have divided my page into 4 sections, this is to differentiate between each seperate part of the album cover.

From our research into album covers we found that images are the focal point of the album cover and that they all have a minimal amount of writing. With this said when designing my album cover I took all of this on board to try and create what I percieve to be a good and eyecatching album cover that also ties in with the genre.

My front section will feature the 3 boys in the band. The front will be divided into three sections and the middle section will be a black background contrasting with the two side panells that will be white. The reason behind this is that the singer in the band in arctic monkeys (Alex Turner) is always the main focus of their performances and posters etc therefore we want to put a stronger focus on him.

For the blank side of the inside of my album cover I felt that a picture of the setting of where we filmed our music video was appropraite however not incorporating the band members. Instead having the drums as the focal point of the image with the red and purple lights in the background. The reason for this is I feel it adds a burst of colour to the black and white album cover and video. As well as this the setting was very breathtaking therefore will make for a good picture.

For the back of the CD cover from the research that I have already done of the arctic monkeys album covers they have had the writing in a small font and positioned in the top left hand corner. I wanted to adopt this idea as i feel it works perfectley with my idea of a spotlight coming from the bottom right hand corner, this therefore gives the impression that they light is lighting up the words. This shows that those songs are under the spotlight as the album is their best yet.

Finally for the actual CD I felt that plain black would be the best. This is because throughout the album cover there is a lot of imagery and this is not typical of an arctiv monkeys album cover, therefore to draw it back to their more simplistic state I felt that this was necessary.

DESIGN 2

Between us in the group, we have all designed a digi pack cover. For my digi pack ive firstly looked at the front cover, by having a photo of the three boys. I have drawn the lead singer, Luke standing in the middle with his blazer (worn in the video) over his shoulder. The drummer Louis holding his drumsticks to the side with his arms crossed and the Bass guitarist Charlie on the other side of Luke, standing slightly back. Their photo will be placed onto an old looking wall background which appears dirty looking and also meeting the indie rock genre. The arctic Monkeys logo, which we will redesign will appear above their heads and will fit around the outline of them. The boys will also be wearing what they wore in the music video, so that the digi pack and video relate.

The inner part of the digi pack will show the back of the boys silhouette. This will work well as this part of the digi pack is the back of the front cover. The boys will be in the same position however their bodys will be blacked out so that they only look like shadows. their silhoettes will be placed onto an old looking background again(the one used for the front cover).

For the CD I have designed a siimple layout. To continue with the texturised background, i have planned to keep this fo the CD aswell. The colourof this is an off white with crcks and dirty marks and it will appear like the CD is scratched.. I have drawn two crossed drumsticks which go over the centre of the CD, this is very simple however the drumsticks is a bold symbol.

The final part of the digi pack (the back), I have layed it out so that the names of the songs appear in the left hand corner, showing the 12 titles. Underneath the list there will be the digi pack barcode which will fit perfectly between the songs and the bottom of the pack. The rest of the space will be used with a photo of one of our guitars lent up against an old wall (the same effect as the other sides of the digi pack). There will be harsh shadows, showing the shadow of the guitar on the floor. Up the right hand side of the back there will be a small print of the copyright conditions and infromation about the production of the music video and digipack.
